Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP): A Guide for Shopify Merchants

•8 min read•40rty team

The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is an open standard that lets AI agents search a store's catalog, build a cart, check out and follow an order through one common interface, instead of a custom integration for every pairing of agent and store. Google announced it on January 11, 2026, launching with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart as co-developers (ucp.dev now lists more, including Amazon, Microsoft and Meta), and Shopify storefronts already publish a UCP profile.

This guide explains what the protocol covers, how Shopify implements it, and what it does and doesn't change for a merchant. Sources are linked inline and were checked on October 18, 2026. For our earlier take on why it matters, see UCP: the boring-sounding protocol.

What UCP Covers

The protocol site, ucp.dev, lists five core capabilities: Catalog Search and Lookup, Cart Building, Identity Linking, Checkout, and Order Management. It runs over REST and JSON-RPC, supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and Agent2Agent (A2A), and works with the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) for payments. The specification is open source under the Apache License 2.0.

Google's launch post says UCP was co-developed and endorsed by more than 20 partners, with payment companies such as Adyen, American Express, Mastercard and Visa among the endorsers, and that Google's first implementation is buying in AI Mode in Search and Gemini.

Two design choices matter most to a merchant:

  • You stay the merchant of record. ucp.dev and Google both say businesses remain the Merchant of Record and keep the customer relationship.
  • Capabilities are declared, then negotiated. A store publishes what it supports; an agent publishes what it supports; the store works out the overlap. Nobody needs an integration meeting to add a new agent.

How Discovery and Negotiation Work

Each business publishes a profile, a JSON document, at /.well-known/ucp on its domain. Shopify's developer docs on profiles describe the flow: an agent includes the URL of its own profile on each request, Shopify fetches and validates it, checks protocol versions, and intersects the capabilities both sides support. Extensions whose parent capability is missing are dropped. The store selects the result.

Versions are dated. Shopify's docs reference 2026-01-23, 2026-04-08 and 2026-08-25, and a developer changelog entry on September 4, 2026 says Shopify storefronts now advertise 2026-08-25, with no changes needed to existing integrations.

You can see your own profile. Open yourstore.com/.well-known/ucp. On the Shopify storefronts we checked on October 18, 2026, the profile listed version 2026-08-25, an MCP endpoint at /api/ucp/mcp, and capabilities including dev.ucp.shopping.cart, dev.ucp.shopping.checkout and extensions for fulfillment and discounts.

How Shopify Implements UCP

Shopify's agent documentation describes a set of UCP services for agent builders:

  • Catalog. A Global Catalog that searches products across Shopify merchants from one endpoint, and a Storefront Catalog scoped to one store.
  • Cart. Builds and changes carts across several turns of a conversation.
  • Checkout. Turns a cart into a checkout. By default the buyer is handed to the merchant's storefront to pay; agents at higher trust tiers can complete checkout directly.
  • Orders. Order status on demand, and UCP-shaped webhooks for fulfillment, refunds, returns, exchanges, cancellations and edits.

Agents identify themselves with their profile, and Shopify uses it to apply trust tiers, rate limits and tool access.

What It Means for Your Store

UCP is the plumbing; the merchant-facing switch is Shopify Agentic Storefronts. That is where you choose which AI channels get your products through Shopify Catalog and where direct checkout is on. Checkout support differs by channel, according to the Shopify Help Center:

  • Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Meta can offer Shopify-powered direct checkout, so the shopper buys without leaving the AI channel. Each channel has country rules; Copilot and Google, for example, show it only to customers in the United States.
  • ChatGPT is a discovery and referral channel. The shopper finishes on your own online store checkout.

Direct checkout has limits worth knowing. Shopify's pages for Copilot and Meta say subscriptions, product bundles, customizable products and B2B-only products aren't supported, and neither are local delivery or pickup. If those are a large part of your sales, expect more shoppers to be sent to your own checkout.

UCP also does not decide which product an agent recommends. It standardizes the conversation after the agent has chosen to talk to your store. Getting chosen still depends on product data: titles, descriptions, barcodes, variants, price, availability and policies. Our guide on how to rank in ChatGPT covers that data, and what AEO is covers the wider picture.

UCP and OpenAI's Agentic Commerce Protocol

OpenAI documents a separate protocol, the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), with three parts: a product feed spec, an Agentic Checkout Spec for merchants and a Delegated Payment Spec for payment providers. OpenAI's key concepts page says OpenAI is not the merchant of record and that Instant Checkout in ChatGPT is currently available to approved partners.

For a Shopify merchant the practical answer is simpler than the acronyms: Shopify Catalog already sends your products to ChatGPT, and per Shopify the purchase completes on your store's checkout.

A Short Checklist

  1. Open /.well-known/ucp on your domain and confirm it returns a profile.
  2. Open Sales channels > Agentic and check your Catalog eligibility and which channels are on.
  3. Complete your terms of service, privacy and refund policies; direct checkout requires them.
  4. Check whether your best sellers are subscriptions, bundles or customizable products.
  5. Read your store's llms.txt; on Shopify it describes the UCP endpoints to agents.

FAQ

What is the Universal Commerce Protocol?

The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is an open standard that gives AI agents, platforms and businesses one common way to handle catalog search, carts, identity linking, checkout and order management. Google announced it on January 11, 2026, launching with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart as co-developers; ucp.dev now lists more, including Amazon, Microsoft and Meta. It is open source under the Apache 2.0 license.

Do Shopify merchants need to do anything to support UCP?

No setup is needed to be reachable. Shopify storefronts publish a UCP profile at /.well-known/ucp and advertise version 2026-08-25, per Shopify's developer changelog. Which AI channels can sell your products, and whether they can check out directly, is managed in the Shopify admin under Sales channels > Agentic.

Who is the merchant of record when an agent checks out through UCP?

The business. Both ucp.dev and Google's launch post state that businesses remain the Merchant of Record.

What is the difference between UCP and ACP?

UCP is the open standard co-developed by Google and Shopify. The Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) is documented by OpenAI and covers a product feed spec, an Agentic Checkout Spec and a Delegated Payment Spec for ChatGPT. For Shopify merchants, Shopify lists ChatGPT as a discovery and referral channel in which purchases complete on the store's own checkout.

Does UCP change how products are ranked in AI answers?

UCP standardizes how an agent talks to a store; it does not publish ranking rules. Which product an agent picks still depends on the product data it reads, such as titles, descriptions, identifiers, variants, price and availability.
