Shopify Agentic Storefronts: How They Work and What to Set Up
Shopify Agentic Storefronts is the Shopify feature that puts your products into AI channels, including ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Meta, and in some of them lets shoppers buy without leaving the conversation. It is on by default for eligible stores, it runs mostly on Shopify Catalog, and you manage it in your admin under Sales channels > Agentic.
This guide covers how each channel gets your products, what checkout looks like in each, the requirements, and what to check in the admin. Facts come from the Shopify Help Center and were checked on October 18, 2026. Channel rules change, so confirm the current ones in your admin.
The Channels at a Glance
| Channel | How products get there | Checkout | Who can sell |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Shopify Catalog | Your online store checkout, opened in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab | Stores selling to US customers (the store can be based elsewhere) |
| Microsoft Copilot | Shopify Catalog | Shopify-powered direct checkout inside Copilot, shown to US customers | Stores selling to US customers |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | Google & YouTube sales channel, or Merchant Center | Direct checkout rolling out, shown to US customers; others go to your store | Stores based in and selling to the US, with a Merchant Center account |
| Meta | Shopify Catalog | Direct checkout on Meta surfaces, on by default for eligible stores | Stores selling to the US, Canada or Mexico; the Facebook & Instagram channel is needed only for shoppable ads |
Shopify's changelog also names Shop as a channel that receives products through Shopify Catalog. Shopify's Help Center adds that orders from AI channels show in your admin with channel or referrer attribution, and that you keep the customer relationship and post-purchase experience.
Shopify Catalog Is the Engine
For ChatGPT, Copilot and Meta, your products travel through Shopify Catalog. Per Shopify's Catalog page, it sends each product's title, description, options, images, price, availability and other key attributes in a structured format, and keeps that data updated. A few details matter:
- Catalog Mapping lets you point Catalog at data stored in metafields, metaobjects, tag prefixes or title delimiters, without changing your online store. It can also group variants so they show as one listing.
- Direct-to-consumer only. Products sold only to B2B or wholesale customers are excluded when Shopify can identify them. Custom B2B setups built with third-party apps may not be detected.
- Crawling still applies. AI channels can also find products by crawling the open web. Blocking crawlers in robots.txt.liquid affects only that path, not the Catalog feed.
Shopify's guide to optimizing products for AI platforms lists what Catalog considers: title, description, images, product type, vendor, collections, tags, barcodes and variants. It also recommends complete store policies and the Shopify Knowledge Base app for the store facts and FAQs AI platforms use. Our guide on how to rank in ChatGPT goes through those fields one by one.
Requirements
The channel pages repeat the same core requirements:
- Products eligible for Shopify Catalog.
- Agreement to the Shopify Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service.
- Terms of service, privacy policy and return and refund policy completed in Settings > Policies.
- Channel-specific rules on where you sell, shown in the table above.
ChatGPT adds one more: any legally required disclosures should sit within the first 6,000 characters of a product description.
The Agentic Page in Your Admin
Since May 11, 2026, Agentic Storefronts has its own page in the admin. According to Shopify's guide to managing it, it shows:
- Performance: sales, orders, online store sessions and conversion rate for each AI channel.
- A search preview of how your products might rank in Shopify Catalog search, with suggested queries from “Top search queries” and “Queries where your products appeared”.
- Your Catalog product count, or a note on why the store may not be eligible.
The default setting, “Allow Shopify to manage for me”, turns on every channel, enables direct checkout where it is supported and enrolls you in new channels as they launch. Turn it off to control Catalog access and direct checkout channel by channel, including a grouped “Other channels” option for smaller AI agents. Turning off Catalog access can take up to 7 days to stop data sharing.
Direct Checkout: What Isn't Supported
Where direct checkout runs, the shopper pays inside the AI channel. Shopify's Copilot and Meta pages list what it can't handle: subscriptions, product bundles, customizable products, B2B-only products, and local delivery or pickup. On Meta, custom pixels and Google Analytics don't fire in direct checkout. If a Meta checkout needs information the surface can't collect, the shopper is sent to your online store checkout with the cart kept.
Separately, Shopify gives agent builders carts and checkout through the Universal Commerce Protocol. There is nothing to configure: your storefront publishes its UCP profile on its own.
The Agentic Plan
For brands not yet selling on a Shopify online store, the Agentic plan lets you use Agentic Storefronts while your Shopify online store stays password protected. Product links in AI channels keep pointing to your existing website until you move to a paid plan and publish.
What to Do This Week
- Open Sales channels > Agentic and confirm your Catalog product count, not an Ineligible warning.
- Complete all three policies in Settings > Policies.
- Check the per-channel performance numbers so you have a baseline.
- Run the search preview on the queries you care about and see which products appear.
- If key product data lives in metafields, set up Catalog Mapping so it reaches Catalog.
Getting listed is the floor; every eligible store is. Which product an assistant picks depends on the data behind the listing. For the wider picture, see what AEO is, and for Shopify's built-in agent file, see llms.txt on Shopify.
FAQ
What are Shopify Agentic Storefronts?
Agentic Storefronts is the Shopify feature that lets customers discover and buy your products in AI channels such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Meta. It is active by default for eligible stores and is managed in the Shopify admin under Sales channels > Agentic.
Do I need to do anything to appear in ChatGPT through Shopify?
If your store is eligible, no. Shopify says products reach ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog without any action. Eligibility requires selling to US customers, Catalog-eligible products, agreeing to the Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service and completed terms, privacy and refund policies.
Are there fees for selling through Agentic Storefronts?
Shopify's pages for ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Meta say there are no channel-specific fees beyond standard payment processing fees.
How do I stop a product appearing in AI channels?
Setting a product's status to Unlisted hides it from Shop, AI channels and search engines. To opt out of a single channel, turn off 'Allow Shopify to manage for me' on the Agentic page and turn off Shopify Catalog access for that channel. Shopify says data sharing can take up to 7 days to stop.
What products aren't supported in direct checkout?
Shopify's Copilot and Meta pages list subscriptions, product bundles, customizable products and B2B-only products as unsupported, along with local delivery and pickup options.
