What Is AEO? AEO vs SEO for Shopify Stores

•8 min read•40rty team

AEO, short for answer engine optimization, is the work of getting your brand and products into the answers AI assistants give: ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. AEO vs SEO comes down to where you show up: SEO earns a place in a list of links, while AEO earns a mention or a product pick inside a generated answer. For a store, that depends heavily on product data as well as pages.

The rest of this guide is for Shopify merchants: what the platforms say about their own AI features, where AEO and SEO overlap, where they don't, and what to do first. Sources are linked inline and were checked on October 18, 2026.

What Google Says: SEO Is Still the Base

For its own AI features, Google is direct. Its Search Central page on AI features says: “There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.” A page has to be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. The same page says you don't need new machine-readable files or special schema.org markup, and that your structured data should match the visible text on the page.

Its listed practices are ordinary SEO: let Google crawl the site, link to important content internally, keep key content in text, provide a good page experience, and keep your Merchant Center and Business Profile information up to date.

That last item is where a store's AEO starts to differ from a publisher's.

Where AEO Differs for a Store: Product Data

A blog post gets into an AI answer by being crawled. A product often gets into an AI shopping answer through a feed. The documented paths for a Shopify store:

  • ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Meta receive products through Shopify Catalog, as part of Shopify Agentic Storefronts. Shopify says Catalog sends each product's title, description, options, images, price and availability in a structured format.
  • Google AI Mode and Gemini get products through the Google & YouTube sales channel or Merchant Center. Shopify's Google channel page says product discovery there is powered by Merchant Center.
  • Web crawling still counts. Shopify notes that products can also be found through open-web crawling and indexing. For ChatGPT search that crawler is OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot.

So for a merchant, most AEO work is product data work. Shopify's own guide to optimizing products for AI platforms lists what it considers: title, description, images, product type, vendor, collections, tags, barcodes (GTIN, UPC, ISBN) and variants with their option names. It also asks for complete refund, privacy and terms policies so agents can answer policy questions, and points to the Shopify Knowledge Base app for store facts and FAQs.

OpenAI's commerce documentation says the same thing from the other side: required feed fields make sure price and availability display correctly, while recommended attributes such as rich media and reviews “improve ranking, relevance, and user trust.”

What Carries Over From SEO

  • Crawl access. Blocking a crawler in robots.txt keeps you out of what it feeds. OpenAI controls search and training with separate crawlers, so you can allow OAI-SearchBot and block GPTBot.
  • Clear, specific text. A description that names the material, the fit and who the product is for helps a search snippet and an AI answer alike.
  • Structured data that matches the page. Google asks for it, and a feed that disagrees with your product page is a feed an agent cannot trust.

What Is New

  • Prompts, not keywords. Shoppers ask assistants full questions (“waterproof boots for wide feet under $200”). The product that answers the most specific version of the question has the clearest case.
  • Catalog eligibility. On Shopify, a store has to be eligible for Shopify Catalog for ChatGPT and Copilot to show its products through it. The Agentic page in your admin shows your Catalog product count, or why the store may not be eligible.
  • Policies as ranking material. Returns, shipping and terms are now read by software answering a shopper's question, not only by the shopper.
  • New files that matter less than they sound. llms.txt gets a lot of attention, but Shopify already serves one on every store, and Google says no AI text files are needed for its features.

How to Measure It

Shopify's Agentic page, under Sales channels > Agentic, shows sales, orders, online store sessions and conversion rate for each AI channel. It also has a search preview of how your products might rank in Shopify Catalog search, with suggested queries from “Top search queries” and “Queries where your products appeared”. Start there before buying anything.

Where to Start

  1. Check your Catalog eligibility and product count on the Agentic page.
  2. Complete your refund, privacy and terms of service policies.
  3. Add barcodes where you have them, and name your variant options plainly.
  4. Rewrite your top product titles and descriptions to state what the product is, who it is for and what it is made of.
  5. Make sure robots.txt allows the search crawlers you want to be found by.

FAQ

What is AEO?

AEO stands for answer engine optimization: the work of getting your brand and products into the answers AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Google's AI Mode give. For an online store it is mostly about the product data those assistants read, not only the pages they crawl.

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

SEO aims for a high position in a list of search results. AEO aims to be named in a generated answer or picked as a recommended product. The foundations overlap: Google says the usual SEO best practices still apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no extra requirements. The difference for a store is that AI shopping channels also read structured product data from feeds such as Shopify Catalog and Google Merchant Center.

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. Google states that a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to appear in its AI features, so SEO is a precondition there. AEO adds work on top of SEO; it does not remove any.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO) are two names for the same goal: appearing in the answers AI assistants generate. Tools and agencies use both labels for the same work.

How do I measure AEO on Shopify?

Shopify's Agentic page in the admin, under Sales channels > Agentic, shows sales, orders, sessions and conversion rate for each AI channel, and a search preview with queries where your products appeared in Shopify Catalog.
