How to Rank in ChatGPT: ChatGPT SEO for Shopify Products
To rank in ChatGPT as a Shopify merchant, make sure your products are eligible for Shopify Catalog, which is how Shopify sends them to ChatGPT, and make the product data in it complete and specific. Then let OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, read your store, because ChatGPT search also draws on the open web.
That is most of ChatGPT SEO for a store. Neither OpenAI nor Shopify publishes the ranking formula, and this guide doesn't pretend to know it. What both do publish is which data they read, and that is where the work is. Sources are linked inline and were checked on October 18, 2026.
How Shopify Products Reach ChatGPT
There are three documented paths:
- Shopify Catalog. Shopify's ChatGPT page says ChatGPT is a discovery-focused referral channel, active by default for eligible stores, and that products reach it through Shopify Catalog with no action needed. This is part of Shopify Agentic Storefronts.
- Web crawling. Shopify notes products can also appear through crawling and indexing. OpenAI's crawler documentation says OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT's search features.
- A direct product feed. OpenAI's Agentic Commerce Protocol docs describe a feed merchants send to OpenAI directly. Onboarding is currently available to approved partners. Most Shopify stores don't need this path, since Catalog already sends their products.
On Shopify, a ChatGPT shopper who decides to buy is sent to your own online store checkout, in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab. Your product page and checkout still have to do their job.
Step 1: Confirm You Are Eligible
To show in ChatGPT through Catalog, Shopify requires that:
- Your store sells to customers in the United States (it can be based elsewhere).
- Your products are eligible for Shopify Catalog.
- You have agreed to the Shopify Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service.
- Your terms of service, privacy policy and return and refund policy are completed in Settings > Policies.
Products in OpenAI's prohibited categories don't appear, and B2B-only products aren't supported. Open Sales channels > Agentic in your admin: it shows your Catalog product count, or why the store may not be eligible.
Step 2: Fix the Product Data
OpenAI's commerce documentation says required feed fields make price and availability display correctly, while recommended attributes such as rich media, reviews and performance signals “improve ranking, relevance, and user trust.” That is the closest thing to a published ranking signal, and it points at completeness.
Shopify Catalog builds its own feed for you, but OpenAI's product feed spec is a useful checklist of what a ChatGPT product listing is made of. Here it is next to the Shopify fields that Shopify says Catalog considers:
| OpenAI feed field | Where it lives in Shopify | OpenAI's guidance |
|---|---|---|
title | Product title | Concise, aim for at most 150 characters; include the variant when relevant |
description | Product description | Plain text, aim for at most 5,000 characters; factual |
brand | Vendor | The brand as shown on the product page |
gtin | Barcode (GTIN, UPC, ISBN) | A valid 8, 12, 13 or 14 digit identifier |
product_category | Product type | Category path from broad to specific |
group_id, variant_dict | Variants and option names | Ties variants to one listing; names each option such as color or size |
dimensions, weight | Variant weight; metafields for dimensions | Product dimensions and net weight, not the shipping box |
return_policy, accepts_returns | Refund policy | Return window and policy URL |
review_count, star_rating | Reviews app data | Count and average on a 0 to 5 scale |
In practice, for each product that matters:
- Write the title as a description, not a slogan. Product type, key attribute, and variant where it matters.
- Write the description as facts. Materials, dimensions, fit, who it is for, what it is not for. An assistant answering “which of these is waterproof?” can only use what the text says.
- Fill in barcodes where you have them, and name variant options plainly (“Size”, “Color”), not internal codes.
- Map metafields into Catalog. If specs live in metafields, Shopify Catalog Mapping can send them without changing your storefront.
- Put required legal disclosures early. Shopify asks for them within the first 6,000 characters of the description.
Step 3: Policies and Store Facts
Shopify recommends complete refund, privacy and terms policies so AI agents can answer policy questions accurately, and points to the Shopify Knowledge Base app to review the store facts and FAQs AI platforms use. OpenAI's feed spec has fields for return windows and policy URLs. A shopper asking ChatGPT “can I return these if they don't fit?” gets an answer from this data.
Step 4: Let OpenAI's Crawler In
OpenAI runs separate crawlers for separate jobs. Per its documentation, OAI-SearchBot is for search, and sites that opt out of it won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot collects content that may be used for training. Each setting is independent, so you can allow OAI-SearchBot and block GPTBot. Changes can take about 24 hours to take effect.
On Shopify you control this in robots.txt.liquid. Blocking a crawler there only affects open-web discovery, not the Catalog feed.
Step 5: Measure
Shopify's Agentic page reports sales, orders, sessions and conversion rate per AI channel, and has a search preview with “Queries where your products appeared” in Shopify Catalog. Take a baseline before you change anything, change a group of products, and compare after a few weeks.
What Not to Spend Time On
- Text written for the machine. Hidden keywords or instructions aimed at AI readers say one thing to software and another to people. The answer a shopper reads is built from your data, so write that data for the shopper.
- A new llms.txt file. Shopify already serves one; see llms.txt on Shopify.
- Protocol work. The Universal Commerce Protocol is already live on Shopify storefronts. It governs carts and checkout, not which product gets recommended.

FAQ
How do I rank in ChatGPT as a Shopify store?
Make sure your store is eligible for Shopify Catalog, which is how Shopify sends products to ChatGPT, then make the product data in it complete and specific: titles, descriptions, barcodes, categories, variants and policies. Allow OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, in robots.txt so ChatGPT search can also read your pages.
What is ChatGPT SEO?
ChatGPT SEO is the work of getting your brand or products named in ChatGPT's answers. For a store it overlaps with SEO, but much of it is product data, because shopping results draw on structured product feeds as well as crawled pages.
Can I pay to rank higher in ChatGPT shopping results?
OpenAI's product feed spec includes an is_ads_eligible field for products its Ads should process. The documentation we read does not describe how ads relate to organic product results, so we don't make claims about it here.
Does ChatGPT use my Shopify product reviews?
OpenAI's product feed spec lists review_count and star_rating as optional fields, and OpenAI says recommended attributes like reviews improve ranking, relevance and user trust. Whether Shopify Catalog passes a given reviews app's data through depends on how that data is stored and mapped.
How long until robots.txt changes affect ChatGPT search?
OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours from a robots.txt update for its systems to adjust.
Do Shopify merchants get ChatGPT Instant Checkout?
Shopify's Help Center describes ChatGPT as a discovery and referral channel for Shopify stores: shoppers complete purchases on the store's own checkout, in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab. OpenAI says Instant Checkout is currently available to approved partners.
Check Your Store
The free 40rty audit scores a storefront's agentic commerce readiness, with no install and no account. Agents and developers can call it at GET https://audit.40rty.ai/api/audit?domain=<store>.
AgentIQ, our Shopify app, finds the shopping prompts your products should win, tracks where they rank in Shopify Catalog and rewrites listings around those prompts. Plans are Small $49 a month (50 products), Pro $149 (1,000), Grow $499 (10,000) and Autopilot $799 (unlimited), per the App Store listing. Cheaper apps cover parts of this; our comparison of Shopify AEO and GEO apps says which.
